Fieldwork

Fieldwalking at Cullings Manor, Sunday 21st March 2010

The EAS will be fieldwalking at Theobalds Park Farm (opposite the new print works West of the A10), on the site of Cullings Manor.

Volunteers should bring hot/cold drinks and a packed lunch, as we have quite a few acres to search. The farm gate will be open and casual parking will be permitted beside the 17th century clay barn, which is currently covered in scaffolding-but please do not obstruct farm traffic.

Fieldwalkers will need suitable footwear and warm clothing, as this is a very exposed site.

The controlled walk will begin at 10am, so everyone should try to be on site by 9.45am at the latest. We hope to be off site by 2.30pm, but please note that there are unfortunately no on site toilet facilities.

All finds will be recorded for future reference. The site has so far produced surface pottery dating from the 12th to the 19th centuries, a few worked flints. One or two sherds of Roman pottery have also been picked up on this site, which lies to the East of the line of Roman Ermine Street, so there should be something of interest to everyone.

This fieldwalk will offer an excellent opportunity for new members to get their eye in, and to learn to identify different pottery fabrics lying on the field surface. If you want to come, just turn up on the day, the more eyes we have, the more we will find!
